CY Investments, LLC is owned and managed by Connie Yoshimura. She is a sansei, a third generation Japanese American. Her father, Theodore, served in the United States Army during WWII. He was a decorated member of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) which was the prototype of the CIA. He also served as a U.S. interpreter in the War Crimes Trial of the Emperor of Japan. Connie was raised by her Caucasian grandparents in Iowa and graduated with a B.A. in English from the University of Iowa and was then admitted to the prestigious Writers Workshop graduate program where she received her Master of Fine Arts degree and was nationally recognized as an award-winning young writer.
One of her instructors was Kurt Vonnegut who told her ‘What you need to do now is go out and see the world,” which is how she eventually ended up in Alaska where she discovered real estate. Originally, her goal was to make enough money so that she could quit work and devote herself to writing full time. But she soon discovered that real estate was every bit as creative as poetry and not nearly as lonely an occupation. Most people buy and sell real estate when a life changing event occurs in their lives: marriage, birth, death, divorce, or job change. A Realtor® gets to be part of their lives at a very important time in their life and it is an honor to be part of their transition.
Ms. Yoshimura soon developed a love of new home sales—part of everyone’s American Dream. Her grandparents never owned a home until later in life. Her Japanese American family lost everything when they were incarcerated by the Civilian Exclusion order into internment camps. Back in Iowa, in the front yard when the maple and oak leaves fell in the fall, Connie remembers arranging the leaves into floor plans. Eventually, her love for new home sales graduated to include residential land development which led to a variety of geographical and price points in new construction. Her residential developments included Kempton Park, Heritage Estates East and West, Turnagain View Park and Estates, Potter Highlands, Campbell Park Condos, Seclusion Bay and Cove in Southport and many others. In addition to single family homesites, Connie also developed an eight plex on Duben in Muldoon; four plexes in Sand Lake, duplexes in Aurora Park and five 20-unit apartment buildings in Spenard and off the Old Seward Highway. Two of her most recent single-family developments include Huffman Timbers at the corner of Lake Otis and Huffman Road and the award-winning Sand Hill Reserve at the corner of Sand Lake Road and West 80th.
Ms. Yoshimura has also served for 5.5 years on the Planning and Zoning Commission where she was elected chair. It was there she learned that zoning creates economic segregation and began to explore the idea of mixed-density homesites within a single tract of land. Holtan Hills is designed for single family homesites, duplexes, four plexes, row housing and eight plexes joined together by a Homeowners Association with covenants, codes and restrictions, as well as design standards.
Ms. Yoshimura is also a working broker. She is the sole owner of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Alaska Realty, an exclusive statewide franchise. In 2023, she ranked #18 out of 1,500 real estate licensees in the state. In 2019, she was named Realtor® of the Year. Ms. Yoshimura is also a Laureate of the Alaska Business Hall of Fame.
The residential land development business is a risky business. The American Bankers Association lists Acquisition, Development and Building as the highest risk of any commercial loan. Ms. Yoshimura prides herself through hard work and in-depth market knowledge to always meet her financial obligations.
